Getting an Electrical Quote

Your selection of an electrical contractor for your home or business is of paramount importance. It’s necessary of course to assure that the contractor your hire is well qualified and experienced in the fault that you have which requires a fix.

While you won’t of course, know all about the fault or the required installation yourself, it’s in your best interests to at least understand something of what you require done. Once you find out what is required, look into it and do your homework with regard to what the job will take to accomplish so that you are assured of getting a good estimate and of your contractors qualifications.

Define your needs and your goals from the contractor prior to telephoning them for an appointment. If your situation is an emergency one do still take the time to ask questions and get at least two estimates. If it not emergent, then three estimates are in order.

Hiring the first contractor who gives you an estimate is probably not in your best interests either. You will want to have to or three estimates from contractors so that you can compare notes. While you’re about it, ask each contractor who comes to give an estimate what they perceive to be the problem with your electrics. If you get offhand answers or the prospective contractor doesn’t answer your questions, they aren’t the person for the job.

A good and honest contractor will give you direct answers to your questions and even if you’re not proficient in the mechanics of it all, will do their best to respond honestly. If you find someone who is evasive, chances are that they’d prefer you not understand at all. The contractor who would prefer not to explain to you what the job will entail will quite likely charge you a little more than normal based on the fact that they feel you can be take advantage of due to your lack of understanding.

Once you know exactly what you require of the contractor then you need to find one who is proficient in the area of service that you require. Ask them questions other than those which you ask about the services they will offer. Those questions are important, of course, but there are others which are equally important prior to hiring the electrical contractor.

Ask each contractor if they will warrant their work. Ask them for references and do phone their former clients. If they refuse to offer you other people for whom they have worked in the past, let that be a red flag for you.

Get it in writing that the work will be done to code in your area, and that if it does not comply with accepted standard for the area or the service that it will be fixed until it does. Ask to see their insurance certification and make sure that it exists.

Lastly, before hiring the contractor or signing any papers, make sure that your contract explains in detail exactly what the work is to be done, what it will cost and the approximate time span it will take to complete.
